A 75-year-old man who took half a tab of the popular prescription sleep aid Ambien to help him get to bed had much more than a mere dream. He was absolutely convinced he had been in a small plane crash, an event so real in his mind that he called police for help.

The man told the dispatcher he was “pinned in” a plane that had crashed in “a field with trees”. The hallucination brought on by the pharmaceutical was so elaborate, the man even reported there were three other people in the plane with him who were all unconscious.

When emergency personnel arrived at the unnamed man’s home, they found him safely in his bed.

While ABC News ends the story on “the manufacturer says when taken correctly the drug is safe,” like its ABC News’ job to help sell the drug for its sponsors, everyone knows the dark legacy of how these drugs affect people. From sleepwalking to sleep-binge-eating to sleepdriving to sleep murders…

All manner of insanity has been reported while on these drugs, taken as prescribed or not.
