At Crimea’s Belbek air base in Sevastopol, pro-Russian troops who have seized it fired warning shots into the air to prevent around 300 unarmed Ukrainian soldiers from approaching, according to reports by the BBC.

The fear is that in such a tense, stand-off situation, something as simple as a stray shot could ignite the powder keg.

According to Sky News:

The unarmed Ukrainian servicemen, waving flags, approached the base which has been held by Russian forces.

Around a dozen Russian soldiers warned them not to approach, before firing several shots into the air and reportedly saying they would shoot the Ukrainians if they continued to approach the base.

All military co-operation between the United States and Russia has been suspended because of Moscow’s actions.

Moscow has said it may be forced to drop the dollar, and has threatened not to repay bank loans to the US if economic sanctions are imposed.
