Last month, we shared the story of Larry Murphee, a Florida man who has been battling his neighborhood Gestapo HOA for nearly two years over his placement of an American flag on his property.
The HOA claimed that Murphee owed $8000 in fees and threatened him with a foreclosure lien on his home over the American flag he placed in a flower pot on his porch.
They were charging him $100 a DAY for non-compliance with their “flag display rules.”
Now two businessmen have stepped in to help Murphee.
Scott Carter and Kevin DeMerritt, both senior executives for Los Angeles-based Lear Capital, told Fox News that they heard the 73-year-old veteran’s story and wanted to help:
“When we read his story it offended our sensibilities. The thought of him losing his home, we felt it was wrong. We wanted to help. They [homeowner’s association] were using the strong-arm of money to get him to get rid of the flag. They were skimming the money from his [paid] dues to pay the fines which created a lien on his house,” Carter said.
Carter and DeMerritt paid the $8,000 plus another $2,500 for tax adjustments.
While the generosity of the two executives is kind and admirable, it is quite sickening that the bullies at the HOA got what they ultimately wanted – money.
Whether or not the HOA will continue to extort money from fine Murphee for displaying his flag is not known, but back in June it didn’t sound like he had any plans to comply with the rules.
“The flag is worth fighting for. If they want to foreclose, bring it on. I’m getting calls from all over the county to stand up. That’s what I’m going to do.”
