“Tips For Jesus” Has Been Leaving Very Generous Tips Across the US

Since September, someone has been leaving extremely generous gratuities for servers, bartenders, and golf caddies across the country.

The mystery person (or people) has left more than $54,100 in tips so far, each ranging from $500 on a $24 bill to $10,000 on a bill for $2,979.

Tips include several in Ann Arbor, Michigan ($3,000 at Tio’s Mexican Cafe, $2,000 at the Alley Bar), a few in Chicago ($3,000 at the Boundary, $5,000 at Paris Club), and many in Los Angeles ($1,000 at Fig & Olive, $10,000 at the Hungry Cat, $500 at Jumbo’s Clown Room).

Who is behind the generosity? That remains unknown, but it does appear to be more than one person, as The Eater observed:

The Instagram account uses the word “we” often, and before they recently switched to a TipsForJesus stamp for the receipts, the username was scrawled in more than one handwriting. TipsForJesus seems to be a college football fan, occasionally lining up with various football games (at Michigan and Notre Dame). A few also bear USC’s slogan of “Fight On.”

When a Notre Dame server noted that the $10,000 tip she got didn’t go through, TipsForJesus replied with a promise to ensure the charge is approved and followed that up with a photo of the Amex statement to prove it:

AMEX got paid, you should’ve got paid. Check with management… sounds like the owners are trying to screw you. Tipsforjesus pays its tabs!  If they stonewall you, tell them you’re talking to us. I bet they pony up. If not, let me know and I’ll have our AMEX rep call and inquire. Nobody is going to ruin the good were trying to do. Tell them to confirm the tip with AMEX. We leave these tips all the time.

The tipper (or tippers) remain unidentified and have not responded to questions about the reasons for their generosity. Praise and requests for visits to specific restaurants and donations to various churches have been posted by fans on the TipsForJesus Instagram account.
