Controlling the Herd

The terrorist organization that is alive and well in America – and they may be your neighbor.

“It’s ridiculous to think a piece of tin would make you one of the good guys”
Sheriff Tom Sworn – Hemlock Grove “Birth

Terrorism, in any form, is reprehensible and should be an affront to every civil person in this country. The goal, as more fully defined below is to “to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping”

Frequently, terror groups strike out against an enemy in order to change the status quo, or to right a mis-perceived wrong. They rail against civility and laws that are designed to protect the weak.

But there is one terror organization that is almost getting a free pass by this administration. And you pay them.

If Islamic terror can be defined as a form of religious terrorism committed by Muslims to achieve varying political ends in the name of religion, then this form of terrorism is to force people to comply with a police state, despite protections provided by the US Constitution.

Abuse of the American public has become so rampant, it is practically impossible to post every egregious act in one posting. Daily, out of control police officers break the laws they swore to protect. It is as if the NDAA’s provision of indefinite detention was made just for them.

Here is an example of just one day’s reporting by the Cato Institute’s National Police Misconduct Reporting Project:

Here are the 6 reports of police misconduct tracked for Friday, August 2, 2013:

  • Rhea County, Tennessee: A man is suing the county, the sheriff, and several other law enforcement officials for $2 million for alleged police brutality, according to a lawsuit filed in federal district court.ow.ly/nAgtW
  • Update: Cleveland, Ohio (First reported 06-12-13): A review of a deadly police chase has found that 75 patrol officers violated orders and police department rules, city official said. Nineteen officers face disciplinary hearings. A fleeing driver and passenger were killed when officers fired 137 shots at them.ow.ly/nA7gX
  • Update: Edmonds, Washington (Previously reported 01-16-13): A now-former officer wad found guiltyof having sex with a woman in his custody. He is facing up to a year in jail and will be required to register as a sex offender for a decade. ow.ly/nA47f
  • Walker, Louisiana: A police officer was arrested. He is accused of hitting a juvenile rape suspect several times after he was already in the officer’s custodyow.ly/nygCB
  • Update: Barren County, Kentucky (Previously reported 05-10-13): The now-former sheriff will spend a year and a half in prison related to his trial on civil rights violations. The judge said that by all accounts the sheriff was a model citizen, but his punishment must reflect the seriousness of the convictions and the former sheriff’s position of authority.  ow.ly/nzINW
  • Indianapolis, Indiana: A man has filed an excessive force lawsuit against the police department and the city alleging battery and defamation. A hotel security video shows him being taken to the ground by officers in the lobby. ow.ly/nye6I

Excessive force

One argument made by police is that they face certain death every time they respond to a call. The fact of the matter is that violent crimes committed is now at a 32 year low, as a 2011 Bureau of Justice Statistics database search shows. In 1979, findings show that 1,208,030 violent crimes were committed, and thus rising until 2010/2011 where 1,203,564 violent crimes were committed.

Despite the falling crime numbers, the numbers of police misconduct has risen in the past years.

A surprising discovery is that when compared to the general public, police misconduct (per 100k) is higher in many areas, such as murders, assaults, and sexual assaults:

pp-stats1

The findings show that of the sexual assault allegations, 52% were children.

There is even evidence that the police themselves become criminals because of being disenchanted with an apparent lack of justice being done in the courts. (Sherman, 1974).

pp-stats2

This chart shows that there is a 64% chance of a law enforcement officer dying by something other than a criminal with a gun. However, one study showed:

“The police also have a higher rate of suicide by firearms than persons who possess guns in their home, where approximately 58% of all suicides were committed with a firearm. Alcohol use has also been found to be a factor in suicide, and police use of alcohol may be precipitated by stress. A Chicago police department study documented alcohol abuse in 60% of police officer suicides.

So whether the firearms related deaths in the above chart were from criminals or a burned out officer is uncertain.

The Cato Institute found that being a police officer, actually found that police officers are over 7x more likelyto be implicated in an act of police misconduct than they are to die in the line of duty from any cause and an officer is over 130 times more likely to be implicated in an act of misconduct than to be killed by intentional violence in the line of duty.

The problem has been identified, categorized, and indexed. But what of the solution?

Until local law enforcement change their rules to “police” themselves, to abide by the laws they swore to protect, and to learn to deescalate situations rather than use excessive force, there is no solutions. Like most problems there must be an internal desire to change. Barring that, the only recourse a person has is within the same judicial system the places officers as being infallible in their duties.

You would stand a better chance with Al-Qaeda. At least they can be reasoned with.

18 USC §2331

5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—

(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;

(B) appear to be intended—

(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or

(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and

(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
