A blast that injured at least three rocked the University of Berkeley, California Monday night leading to an emergency declaration and evacuation of the entire campus of over 35,000 students.

It is unclear what caused the accident.

According to ABC News, the explosion occurred following a power outage.

However, The Daily Californian has indicated that the explosion near Berkeley’s California Hall happened prior to the power going out at around 4:30 pm.

Mouglof and Berkeley fire chief Gil Dong said that two hours following the outage calls began streaming in about the explosion. Fire crews are on scene to investigate the cause of the outage and explosion, and are in the process of rescuing any students who may have been trapped in elevators when the power went out.
