A Russian weapons manufactures has introduced a new cruise missile system that can be hidden inside a standard 40-foot cargo container. The Club K Missile system is capable of firing up to four long-range, satellite guided missiles from a ship out at sea, land-based tractor trailer, or a train.
According to the Russian company, the Club K is being marketed to the US government, as well as countries in Latin America and Asia. The price tag, according to Janes Defense Weekly estimates the cost at between $10 and $20 million. In response to concerns that the weapons system would end up in the hands of terrorist organizations, the company said it is being marketed for military application, not for terror.
The concern for Customs and Border Patrol now that the weapon has become available is to ensure a Club K Missile belonging to a rogue nation or terrorist organization isn’t smuggled into a U.S. port. Up until recently, they were not even aware of its existence. When asked by reportes about his knowledge of the missile system and whether he was aware of its existence, Customs and Border Patrol Director John Porter responded by saying, “I am now.”
Such a weapon, if imported into the United States, could rapidly deploy a cruise missile before any defense systems could stop it. The Pentagon is reportedly already working on systems to counter the new potential threat.
