Louisiana Burn Victim Set Herself On Fire

Two days after a young black woman was set on fire in Franklin Parish, Louisiana, authorities have announced that the burns were self inflicted. They believe that Sharmeka Moffitt wrote racial slurs and KKK on her own vehicle, doused herself in an accelerant and set herself on fire with a cigarette lighter, then called 911.

Much of the community was enraged when it was reported that the police were “unsure” whether or not this was a hate crime.

Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas said that evidence gathered at the scene points towards Moffitt’s story about 3 attackers in white hoodies being made up.

“This is a case in which the investigators had to pursue the facts that were presented.  It’s been a very disturbing case for everyone involved.”

Police gathered evidence throughout the night and concluded with the scene on Monday morning. At the State Police Crime Lab, it was discovered Moffitt’s fingerprints were on the lighter and the lighter fluid recovered from the crime scene.

“There is more physical evidence along those lines that back this up,” Thomas said. “All of the evidence is pointing back to the victim inflicting this upon herself.  No evidence has shown any other person was involved. This case is solved.”

Thomas and Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb said that no charges have been filed against Moffitt at this time and that the evidence will be reviewed by the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“My heart truly goes out to the Moffitt family, who are more than just members of our community, they are my friends,” Thomas said. “I hope we can come together as a community and pray for their wellbeing and a quick recovery of Sharmeka.”

Moffitt’s parents have released a statement.

“Our family is devastated to learn the circumstances surrounding our daughter’s injuries. While this was not the resolution we had expected, it is a resolution, and we appreciate the thorough investigation by the local and state police as well as federal agencies.

We are sincerely sorry for any problems this may have caused and wish to express our appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers and support we have received from friends, acquaintances, church organizations and government officials.

Over the coming days and weeks, our focus will be on Sharmeka and her recovery. We ask that you continue to pray for her and for our family, and that you respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
