Israel Launches Another Airstrike On Syria

Russia Today is reporting that Israel has conducted an air strike near Latakia, Syria.

An Israeli official who refused to be named said the strike targeted Russian made missiles headed for the Lebanese group Hezbollah. There has been no official confirmation of the strike from Israel.

President Bashar al-Assad is Alawite and Latakia, a port city, is one of the strongholds of the Alawite community.

“Several explosions were heard in an air defence base in the Snubar Jableh area,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based activist network. (source)

There have been five previous incidents in which Israel is believed to have struck inside Syria. The first of those took place in January. In all of the alleged attacks, the reason given was that Israel feared that weapons were making their way into the hands of Hezbollah. But many critics said that it was just an excuse for a blatant direct attack inside Syria,

As the bogeyman of the Middle East, how appropriate that Israel chose Halloween to launch an attack.

An Obama administration official confirmed the Israeli airstrike overnight, but provided no details. Another security official said the attack occurred late Wednesday in the Syrian port city of Latakia and that the target was Russian-made SA-125 missiles.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the attack. There was no immediate confirmation from Syria. (source)

Israel has refused to officially confirm that the strike took place. This refusal shows that Israel is increasingly behaving like a ‘rogue nation’ who strikes as and when it chooses with assumed impunity and the knowledge that nobody will step in to stop them.
