German Intel Agency: 64 Islamic Extremists Have Infiltrated German Military

After experiencing multiple terror attacks this summer, it seems that the Germans are finally starting to pay attention to the threat posed by Islamic extremists in their midst. The German military for instance, has fessed up to the fact that at least 64 Islamist militants are believed to have infiltrated their ranks.

German Military Intelligence (MAD) is reportedly “checking a three-digit number of suspected extremists in the armed forces: 268 right-wing extremists, 64 Islamists and six left-wing extremists,” according to Die Welt. The intelligence agency admitted that insider attacks could be a possibility in the future. “Risks by such perpetrators for the military compounds inside and outside the country cannot be excluded in that regard.”

But more importantly, the German military fears that these groups are pushing their members to join the Bundeswehr so that they can gain military training. A similar trend has been seen in the US Military, where members of dozens of street gangs and prison gangs have infiltrated every branch of the military.

Though the number of right-wing extremists sounds overwhelming, the German military is probably far more concerned with the Islamic extremists. Earlier this year it was revealed that as many as 29 former German soldiers had defected to ISIS.

Until recently, the only people who were screened by the military, were those who had already enlisted. The German military plans to change that by introducing pre-enlistment security checks that will be run by MAD, and will prevent criminals and terrorists from joining the military.
