Couple Faces Jail Time From Overdue Library Books

Every now and then the news cycle will take a break from reporting on the chaos and mayhem of the world, to deliver some quirky story about a library book being returned decades late. However, the days when you could own up to that kind of mistake, pay your dues, and move on with your life, are over. More and more, people who forget to return library books are facing jail time rather than fluff piece news coverage.

Just take a look at what happened to this couple after they forgot to return a couple of library books.

So why didn’t the prosecutor accept her money order? Because she had to pay a $105 “diversion fee” to the prosecutor’s Economic Crimes Unit before she could pay the library fee. After going back and forth over the fees and receiving “threatening messages” from the detective in charge of the unit, a $100 warrant was placed on the couple, and they had to show up in court.

Welcome to America’s police state, where every mistake is an opportunity for the government to extract as much money from you as they can.
