A man who walked into a Texas bar last night and fatally shot the manager was killed by an armed customer.
From the Star-Telegram:
The shooting was reported about 6:15 p.m. at Zona Caliente Sports Bar and Grill in the 6500 block of South Cooper Street.
Witnesses reported that a man arrived at the bar and walked up to a male employee, said Lt. Chris Cook, police spokesman. An altercation ensued, and the man pulled out a gun and shot the employee, killing him.
A customer who had a concealed handgun then approached the man and fatally shot him.
“By all accounts, he decided to engage the shooter because he wanted to prevent further loss of life,” Cook said. “If the shooter was going to do additional shooting, because he engaged the shooter there was no further loss of life.”
Police have identified the gunman as 48-year-old James Jones of Grand Prairie and the victim as 37-year-old Cesar Perez of Duncanville. The man who killed Jones has not been identified, reports Dallas News.
Two loaded guns and two knives were found on Jones, Cook said Thursday.
Cook told the Arlington Voice that witnesses said Jones was acting “incoherent” and “strange” when he entered the bar. He reportedly came in and started yelling, and without warning, drew a handgun and shot Perez.
The man who stopped Jones is not expected to face any charges, as the bar is a “blue sign” business. State law allows licensed holders to conceal carry into such an establishment.
“We’re treating the good guy as sort of a hero,” Cook told Dallas News.
Jones, on the other hand, did not have a license to carry.
An investigation is in progress, but as of now, police do not have evidence that Jones knew Perez.
