Breaking: School Shooting in WA State

shooting

A gunman opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, just north of Seattle, this morning.

Law enforcement officials told CNN that the shooter, said to be a student, shot five people – killing one – before turning the gun on himself.

Three of the victims are in critical condition and one is in serious condition.

Details:

The shooting began in the school cafeteria. Someone in the school called 911 around 1:30 ET.

Authorities “are confident that there is only one single shooter,” Marysville police spokesman Robb Lamoureux told reporters.

Another federal law enforcement official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At least one person was airlifted. Three people are in surgery and one is being transferred to a hospital in Seattle.

A student told CNN that he knew the shooter, and said the gunman was a popular student who was a recent victim of bullying.

The Seattle Times reported:

Austin Joyner, a student at the school, said on Twitter that he saw the shooter come into the cafeteria, walk over to a table, pull out a gun and shoot students who were sitting there.

Jarron Webb, 15, said the shooter was angry at a girl who would not date him, and that the girl was one of the people shot.  He said he believes one of the victims was his friend since kindergarten.

Students reported pandemonium in lunchroom after the shooting, with dozens rushing for doors and then jumping a fence to escape.

Freshman Austin Wright said every exit in lunchroom was jammed with kids escaping gunfire. “I heard three gunshots and I ran.”

FBI agents from Seattle are reportedly on their way to assist.

Chilling testimony from students are being reported.

From CNN:

A student at Washington state’s Marysville-Pilchuck High School walked into the school’s cafeteria, went up to a table with students, “came up from behind … and fired about six bullets into the backs of them,” witness Jordan Luton told CNN. “They were his friends, so it wasn’t just random,” Luton said.

From KOMO News:

Dr. Joanne Roberts at Providence Regional Medical Center said four young victims were transported there after the shootings. Three of them – two girls and a boy – are in very critical condition with head wounds and are undergoing surgery. The fourth student, a boy, is in critical but stable condition, and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, she said.

From CNN:

Fryberg was announced as the high school’s freshman homecoming king on October 17, according to YouTube video of the ceremony and accounts from students to CNN.

Fryberg’s multiple social media accounts depict him frequently hunting, and using rifles. His social media accounts say he was a Native American and a member of the Tulalip tribe.

Investigators are tracing a Beretta .40-caliber handgun, the weapon believed used in the attack, a federal law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

This is a breaking story and will be updated as new details emerge.
