Europe was gripped by another horrific attack today. Dozens of people were injured in the city of Wurzburg, Germany, when a man with an axe and a knife boarded a train at the Heidingsfeld station, and started swinging at everyone he could find. Estimates of the number of casualties range between 15 and 20, many of whom are in critical condition. No deaths have been confirmed at this time.
Witnesses say that the man fled the scene after the brief and bloody rampage, before being quickly surrounded by armed police officers. The attack ended when the man was shot dead by the police. The train line between Würzburg and Ochsenfurt has since been closed down.
As is typical in these incidents, the police didn’t initially reveal the identity or the motivations of the attacker. Given the recent terrorist attack in neighboring France, most observers believed the incident was probably a terror attack, which seems likely as more information comes to light.
According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, the attacker was a 17-year-old migrant from Afghanistan. He added that the police are currently looking to see if their was an Islamic motive for the attack, since multiple witnesses claimed that the migrant made religious statements during the incident.
