So, as of January 1st 2014 kids at Californian schools can use the bathroom and/or locker room they feel is most associated with their sex, rather than the bathroom their biological sex dictates. Right.
Has state Governor Jerry Brown lost his mind? Has he, or anyone on his staff researched this?
Okay, before I start, a word to the haters and death threat merchants that will assume I am anti-gay, anti-transgender and all that. I’M NOT ANTI…but I am sick to death about hearing constantly what rights these people have against the lack of rights the rest of us have. It is unbalanced and unfair.
In my opinion allowing this is destructive to all those involved in the situation. As toddlers, kids aren’t aware of sexuality, and that’s great. Children are children for such a short time, and that period of innocence where having a penis or a vagina is totally unimportant is a wonderful time for children. The time where they are pure and untouched by matters that will all too soon concern them. To little kids a bathroom is just a means to an end…it prevents you walking around in wet pants all day.
In truth, the bathrooms bother me less, cubicles can be installed in all bathrooms giving at least a degree of privacy. It’s not ideal, but it’s a way of ensuring young people don’t have to see the genitals of others if they don’t want to.
As children mature they become self-aware and aware of differences in others as compared to themselves. Boy girl, black white, able-bodied disabled, it’s all part of the learning process.
When that process begins, and kids start to question, that’s usually the time that parents and carers start giving the answers, and this is the point where children start to become aware that there are fundamental differences between boys and girls.
Kids are also cruel little creatures. I can see no good outcome for a child who has decided they are transgender…though I dispute that they understand enough at a young age to make that decision.
The problems really start to stack up as the child who has made the decision that they are transgender gets older.
How will a girl, who has decided she is a boy feel in the male locker room being stared at as she strips off? Make no mistake she will be stared at, it’s what teenage boys do, and it’s totally normal behaviour. It’s irritating, and I would imagine in a group situation as the only person who is biologically different, it would be intimidating, but it is every young mans dream to have a teenaged girl opting to get naked in front of him.
When faced with the inevitable, that one of these hormonal males gets an erection won’t that underline to her that although she feels male, she is in fact very female?
Will the young man with the erection be branded as lewd? He is after all only having a reaction to female flesh that all young men have, often when they least want or expect it.
Let’s turn it around. A male who feels female is in the girls locker room. Will him getting one of these unexpected erections that teenage boys are prone to make him doubt he has made the right decision regarding his gender? Does he understand enough about how his body works to understand that erections just sometimes happen or will he assume he is sexually attracted to females and therefore is not transgender after all?
The third aspect to be explored is regarding kids that have made the decision they are transgender and are happy with it. What if the others using the locker room are not happy? What about them? Where do their rights come into all this? What if a class of teenaged boys, or girls are uncomfortable stripping and showering with a member of the biological opposite sex?
Are they going to be branded haters? As they are of the age where they can be prosecuted are they going to end up with a criminal record for committing a hate crime if they speak out?
What happens when one of these transgendered individuals turns into an adult, but others in their class are still legal minors? Will they be branded paedophiles for exposing themselves to individuals who are still legally children? I doubt it.
Finally, well for this article at least, what will be done regarding individuals who claim to be transgender but aren’t? Those who think it funny, who take a dare to get into the opposite sex locker room? What if the odd supposed transgender individual is conning the system for evil intent, to get close to members of the opposite sex for purely sexual purposes? How are these people going to be found out and removed?
This all comes down to rights and respect, and it is morally wrong and possibly illegal to allow one group of people rights and deny those same rights to others.
Kids have enough issues coming to terms with their bodies and dealing with the hormonal assault that puberty brings, allowing what are essentially mixed sex bathrooms and locker rooms will exacerbate that.
I can only speak for myself but if this comes to the UK my girl is out of school. Not because I’m a hater but because until she grows up I am the one who has to stand up for her rights as an individual, and I will do so, as robustly as I have to.
