Watch the Citizens of Baltimore Stand up to the Mob

As is usually the case, not everyone showed up to fight the police or pillage their community. Some just wanted to have a peaceful protest, and did everything they could to stop the violence.

Despite the best attempts of some to portray the unrest in Baltimore as a kind of righteous resistance against an unjust system, the evidence suggests otherwise. By now we’ve all seen footage of the looting and the burning store fronts. For Baltimore, the past few days have been absolute madness as the vile and the ignorant took to the streets to wreck their city.

But as is usually the case, not everyone showed up to fight the police or pillage their community. Some just wanted to have a peaceful protest, and did everything they could to stop the violence. One video of an unidentified man has gone viral after he was filmed standing between a police line and several protestors.

Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. It took a lot of guts to do that. Standing between two forces that may be willing to fight it out is never an easy decision. But that moment was one upped by another gentleman who decided to stand in front of a police line later that evening. These weren’t protestors he was standing up to; they were members of the angry mob that did so much damage that night. Vietnam veteran Robert Valentine took to the streets to shame these kids into going to home, and he seemed to be completely unafraid of them. CNN managed to interview him as he stood his ground.

After being asked if he feared for his safety, he explained that he’s seen things much worse than this and that “…They need to have their butts at home. They need to be in their home units with their families studying and doing something with their life.”

It can’t be stressed enough that for the most part, these people really are just a bunch of kids. This became abundantly clear when one mother recognized her son on television, and witnessed him throwing rocks at the police. She later showed up to a rally he was attending. She slapped and berated him in front of everyone as he left the scene, probably feeling extremely embarrassed that his mother had to take him home.

It’s a relief to see that there are still some good people out there who are willing to do the right thing. It seems plainly obvious that what happened to Freddie Gray was wrong, but the response of so many kids in that city has been inexcusable. The next time you hear about the Baltimore riots, remind yourself that there are still good people on the ground who are trying to alleviate the situation. And if any future riots ever get you down, remind yourself that at any given moment, it’s only one step away from turning into a Michael Jackson video.

Reports of this man getting into a dance fight with the police in an empty warehouse, remain unverified.
