When carrying a concealed firearm, be sure to keep your hand off the trigger until you’re ready to use it. That’s the lesson learned by off-duty Northern Kentucky police officer Darryl Jouett.

Jouett entered an elevator with his wife earlier this month and was fumbling with his gun, while also carrying a box and having a conversation. When he tried to put the gun back in his holster it discharged, sending the bullet ricocheting in the confined space. He was struck in the abdomen, as the video below shows.

Jouett, a 25-year veteran of the police force, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
