This astounding image captures the moment Klyuchevskoy, a volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula in eastern Russia, erupted.

A column of fire stretched almost a mile up into the clouds. The volcano, which according to the United States Geological Survey, is one of the largest land volcanoes on the planet, erupting every couple of years. It is sited at the north end of a chain of 30 volcanoes.

This image was captured by Marc Szeglat on October 16th. He was about ten miles from the crater when the eruption occurred.
