In India, where it gets hot enough to feel like a sauna just sitting in one’s home and not everyone has access to electricity and central air conditioning, anything that can be done cheaply to make things even a little bit cooler can change people’s lives.

Enter the Eco-Cooler. It’s basically a board fitted with recycled plastic bottles that funnels wind into the home.

The Eco-Cooler can instantly lower the indoor temperature by 5°C; in other words, it is the difference between an 86° fahrenheit room to a 77° one. Some 25,000 homes in villages across Bangladesh have been fitted with Eco-Coolers so far. How-to instructions for building your own can be found here.
