Baltimore, MD — On Saturday, May 2, 2015, there was a feeling of gratitude and hope for the advocates of Freddie Gray. The day began with an abundance of optimism, as it was the day after Baltimore City Chief Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby announced that all six law enforcement officials involved in the death of Freddie Gray, including the lieutenant and sergeant, would be officially charged in his death. This tragic incident that occurred two weeks ago surfaces during the devastating police brutality epidemic currently plaguing the United States. Since Gray’s death, there has been a tremendous effort from Baltimore city residents in the form of protests, rallies, and marches throughout the city. This movement has triggered other major cities in the country to partake in similar advocacy endeavors. People from around the world have come together to spread awareness about the police brutality epidemic while showing their love and support to the murdered victims and their families.

Saturday morning began with a rally in front of City Hall. The crowd in attendance reached into the tens of thousands and continued to grow significantly throughout the day. It consisted of individuals from all walks of life, races, and ages. The crowds were full of support groups and different organizations, all coming together to spread awareness about Freddie Gray and other men and women who have died at the hands of the Police State. Most of the speakers at the rally consisted of friends and family of Freddie, as well as other like-minded individuals in the Black Lives Matter movement. Cheers echoed as the enormous crowd absorbed the pertinent information shared from the microphone. The message of justice was profound, but most notable was the reiteration of peace, a narrative the mainstream media seems disinterested in. Conventional news outlets have seemingly found it more important to televise and report only the negative incidents that have occurred since the protests began two weeks ago. However, these activist efforts are far more peaceful than the corporate media has led people to believe. The individuals in attendance and their intentions are genuinely positive.

The overall concern that most people fear is that the six law enforcement officials who were charged with Freddie Gray’s death will not be convicted. This concern comes as no surprise considering that we have continued to see an unjust pattern of murderous cops being exonerated from the charges they have incurred, and even worse, most are not even indicted for their crimes at all. This concern has everyone “on edge” but the fight for justice will undoubtedly continue if they are not prosecuted, convicted and sentenced harshly for their involvement in Freddie’s death.

Another big concern in Baltimore was safety as the streets were lined with armed military and law enforcement officials. They had been using extreme measures to disperse crowds and take control of peaceful protesters. The most shocking revelation to the crowd in attendance was the discovery of positioned snipers on the building directly behind where they were gathered. It was only when one of the speakers at the rally told everyone to turn around and look at the rooftop of the building behind them, that they realized there were snipers present to “keep the peace”. Gasps of fear and anger swept over the crowd as everyone appeared to feel violated and disgusted about the shocking discovery. Boos and middle fingers were swiftly aimed back at the rooftop snipers.

It was very important for the message of justice and peace to be expressed. A recent display of this sentiment was apparent when Bloods and Crips announced a reconciliation — a decision to join forces to protect the community against the onslaught of police brutally. Their unity was evident as they embraced each other with much respect when they arrived at the rally on Saturday. Their presence was well received, and they spoke honestly about their peaceful intent to help the community and shared stories of inspiration with the crowd.

It was not only the speakers at the rally who inspired the crowd but also the individuals in attendance with a powerful voice who would not hesitate to speak about the current injustices and wrongdoings of law enforcement. One attendee at the rally made a laminated poster which depicts Marilyn Mosby in a triumphant stance with the slogan “I’m not for sale, they’re going to jail.” In the lower left corner of the poster were the mugshots of the six law enforcement officials charged with Freddie Gray’s death. Mosby is seen as a heroine and nearly everyone who spoke at the rally vehemently expressed their gratitude for her decision, and this particular protester proudly held up his self-made Mosby poster while standing in proximity to where the armed military and police were. He then began shouting passionately at them about their unlawful acts of violence and corrupt behavior that can be seen in the video below.

Currently, one of the most inspiring individuals in the movement is Kwame Rose. He is a Baltimore resident who has poured his heart and soul into spreading awareness about the tragedy of Freddie Gray. However, his endeavors reach far beyond that, as this incredible young man voluntarily works around the clock to make positive changes for the city in a multitude of different ways. He recently gained national attention after a heated encounter with famed mainstream media pundit, Geraldo Rivera. Kwame spoke many times at the rally on Saturday and led the five-mile march from city hall to the CVS on Pennsylvania and North.

Another key player in the movement is Jay Johnson, better known as Grandmaster Jay. He also spoke at the rally and has been a leader in the marches as well. Additionally, he has been a powerful voice for the people of Baltimore and has done a tremendous job to show his support in that regard. At the conclusion of the march, while standing outside the CVS, he expressed admirable acknowledgment for Anti-Media and was very forthcoming about recording a testimonial of his experiences in Baltimore, the impact it has had on the community, and how to stay focused during this tragic time. His advice and words of wisdom are inspiring.

Baltimore is still recovering from the tragic loss of Freddie Gray. They have turned their grievances into peaceful and positive endeavors to raise awareness about police brutality in Baltimore and across the nation. The overall message is very clear — the residents of Baltimore City want justice for Freddie Gray, which means all six law enforcement officials charged should receive justifiable convictions and harsh punishment for their crimes at sentencing.
