Car bumpers have been used – along with tires and barbed wire – to build barricades outside government buildings.

Arsen Avakov, Ukraine’s interior minister, has warned pro-Russian activists who have taken over state buildings that they have 48 hours to enter negotiations or they will be removed by force.

The Ukrainian interim government regard the activists as domestic terrorists, and have warned that unless they wholeheartedly embrace a political solution, an anti-terrorist operation in three regions will be stepped up, and concluded within the next 48 hours.

Speaking to reporters Avakov said:

“For those who want dialogue, we propose talks and a political solution. For the minority who want conflict they will get a forceful answer from the Ukrainian authorities.”

Some of the demonstrators are calling on Vladimir Putin to come to their aid. A man identified by the name Vitaly said:

“Mr Putin, have mercy on your fighters. If you lose us then you will lose the last hope to create a good neighbour.”

The Russian President has said repeatedly that he has no intention of invading Ukraine but that he reserves the right to protect Russian interests in the country.

Moscow also said earlier today that it may make Ukraine pay in advance for any domestic gas supplied to the country. The discount that Ukraine once enjoyed has already been removed and Moscow maintains that Kiev owes millions of dollars for gas it has already received.
