Trump surprises troops in Afghanistan on Thanksgiving

Published on

President Trump on Thursday made an unannounced trip to Afghanistan, his first as president, to visit troops for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The president arrived at Bagram Air Field, the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan, and is expected to be on the ground for roughly 2 1/2 hours as part of the surprise trip. He served turkey to troops in a cafeteria, posed for photos with them and delivered brief remarks to them in a hanger.

While in the country, Trump held a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani during which he announced he has restarted peace talks with the Taliban following last weeks prisoner swap. He also said he’d like to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
