Trump and Putin Hold First Telephonic Conference Since Election

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump conducted their first telephone call on Monday, in which they discussed the US and Russia’s involvement in Syria, and they agreed to cultivate and improve bilateral ties, according to the Kremlin.

According to the Trump team, the president-elect is “very much looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia and the people of Russia.”

Trump was criticized vehemently for his desire to mend relations with Russia and his position on leaving the NATO alliance.

At a news conference last Wednesday, Barack Obama said that he would travel to the countries of NATO allies to reassure them that there is no reason to be concerned. He said:

In my conversation with the president-elect, he expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships. And so, one of the messages I will be able to deliver is his commitment to NATO and the trans-atlantic alliance… There is no weakening of resolve when it comes to America’s commitment to maintaining a strong and robust NATO relationship.

Will Trump take the US out of the NATO alliance? Will he remove sanctions on Russia from the Obama administration?

At this point, Trump has not commented. We will have to wait and see.
