Suspected Russian troops have surrounded a Ukrainian military base

NATO has issued a statement saying that Russia is threatening the peace of Europe as a whole and not just the Ukraine. The UN has also condemned the Russian troop movements into Crimea.

John Kerry has said that:

“Russia is behaving in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped-up pretext”.

Ukraine has no partially shut it’s airspace, only allowing civilian traffic to cross it’s sky. Sky News is reporting that Russian troops have surrounded a Ukraine military base and are preventing soldiers leaving.

Analysts have said the crisis is the most dangerous situation since the cold war and they fear that a relatively simple act could ignite the powder keg.

“It would require one foolish act, I don’t know, a trigger happy Russian soldier, a Ukrainian guard who acts aggressively at one of these institutions that has been taken over by Russia or Russian supporters.

A foolish act now could tip us over the edge.

The one thing that is absolutely essential now is that the West speaks with a single voice.

This was echoed by Sir Tony Brenton former British ambassador to Russia.

“It only requires one person to make a mistake for things to go very badly wrong.” he said speaking on Murnaghan this morning.

The West has once again threatened sanctions against Russia…like that’s going to have an effect. At this point in time Russia is riding high economically, they have oil and gas revenue filling their coffers, much of that money coming out of Europe.

Putin really doesn’t give a rats arse about what people think of him, this is more than evident by the disinterest he shows when meeting other heads of state. His boredom and lint-picking is there for all to see.

Although Putin is an arrogant swine the difference between him and the Western leaders is blatant. That they talk non-stop but do nothing, Putin is the polar opposite, he rarely says anything, letting his actions tell the world exactly where he, and his country stand.

Let’s hope everyone holds their nerve and that the analysts are wrong on this occasion.
