Texas Boy Invents Device To Stop Babies From Dying In Hot Cars

No matter how many times it’s said to not leave a child or a dog in a hot car, people still do it, and death still results. Well now, one ten-year-old boy is trying to make a difference and save lives with a new device he invented.

Since 1998, at least 712 children have died of heatstroke in the US after being left in hot vehicles. Because of this sobering statistic, Bishop Curry of Texas, who is only ten years old, has come up with a new “gadget” that could save young lives. Bishop said he would spend his summer vacations developing the device. It’s a small box with air ducts that blows cool air when it becomes too hot inside a car and an antenna that alerts parents and emergency services. The box is designed to be latched on to a child’s car seat so that they may take advantage of the cooling air.

Bishop is calling his invention “The Oasis,” and he’s already applied for a patent. The application should be approved later this year so the new device can become widely available. Bishop, from McKinney, a town 30 miles north of Dallas, said he came up with the idea “when a baby named Fern died down the street” due to a hot car and he saw the story on the news. Bishop and his family have a number of manufacturers lined up to build the device, and they have already raised more than $20,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help finance its development.

Bishop Curry is one young hero. According to his GoFundMe account:

Bishop is a 5th grader who is fascinated with making things. From creating a home-made catapult and ping pong ball cannon, to thinking of ways to melt ice and snow on roads without using salt.

His latest idea is getting more attention – a car seat that can help prevent hot car deaths in children.

“I made a clay prototype and the invention’s name is Oasis,” Curry said.

Bishop Curry’s invention, The Oasis, could save the lives of babies left in hot cars.

“We live in Texas where hot car deaths are far too common,” the boy’s father, also called Bishop Curry, wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Bishop already has a provisional patent and a 3D model of his invention”.

The 10-year-old, who has a one-year-old sister,  told NBC that “it would be a dream to have lots of inventions that would save many lives”.

Not all heroes wear capes, but in this case, Bishop Curry deserves one. Someone get this young man a cape!
