TEPCO has announced that they have readings that record 1.9 million becquerels of radiation per liter of water at the Fukushima number 2 reactor. This follows a reading of 1.8 million becquerels at number 1 reactor on December 13th.

The measurements are from groundwater, water that will end up in the Pacific Ocean, which lies just yards from the stricken site. There is also a realistic fear that contaminated groundwater will lead to a drinking water crisis in Japan as the contamination spreads underground.

These figures beggars the question of why Japan and TEPCO are still being allowed to ‘go it alone’ despite offers of assistance from the international community.
