Sunspot AR1944 is Back…And It’s Still Flaring: Updated

UPDATE: NASA is reporting that returning sunspot AR1944, now known as AR1967 has released FIVE M-class flares since yesterday.

AR1944, the sunspot that produced strong flares two weeks ago is back. It has travelled across the far side of the sun and has just reappeared on the far southeastern limb.

It has been renumbered, as all sunspots are once they have travelled across the farside, and reappeared, AR1944 is now called AR1967.

It decayed a little while it was out of sight but re-emerged with a bang, sending out an M4 flare. The image is captured above by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory.

NOAA estimates the chance of further M class flares at 50% today and X class at 5%.
