Armageddon Scenarios

Sunspot AR1882 is Almost Directly Earth Facing

NOAA estimates the chances of this happening are 75% for an M-class flare and 35% for an X-class during the next 24 hours.

A series of CME’s is set to deliver glancing blows as they pass Earth between now and October 30th. On October 31st a stronger CME will hit. This one is from an M4-class flare on October 28th that arose from sunspot AR1882. Neither NOAA nor NASA has commented on the likely effects, if any, at this point.

The sunspots circled in the photograph are those that harbor the energy for the strongest flares but it’s AR1882 that is causing the most concern. At this point it is almost directly facing Earth and any flares issuing from it are very likely to be geoeffective.

NOAA estimates the chances of this happening are 75% for an M-class flare and 35% for an X-class during the next 24 hours.

Todays sunspot number is 155.

There are no coronal holes on the Earth side of the Sun today.
