In extreme cases this can cascade from transformer to transformer and knock out large areas of the electrical grid.

Todays sunspot number is 113. Over the weekend two CME’s impacted the Earth’s magnetic field and sparked a major light show visible as far south as Colorado. Cape Cod saw a superb show and you can see a picture here.

AR1748 still harbors complex magnetic fields that can give rise to both M and X class flares, and any it throws off over the next couple of days will be earth directed.

Flares can cause problems by interfering with satellite signals and in extreme cases can cause surges that damages electrical transformers. In extreme cases this can cascade from transformer to transformer and knock out large areas of the electrical grid.
