Study Shows Gun Injuries Go Down During NRA Convention, but the Study is Gun Fear Porn

Melissa Healy was given the task to put her name to a news ‘report’ in the LA Times intended to demonize the National Rifle Association, as well as gun owners in general.

She dutifully affixed her name and wrote the ‘report’ assigned to her by one of the progressive media press’s main propaganda departments, the LA Times.

In this gun fear porn ‘report’, Healy claims “new research” shows that while the NRA convention is going on gun-related injuries reported in ERs go down.

The implication, of course, is that people are safer when those bloodthirsty, careless gun owners are attending the NRA convention.

A key sentence from her article, one that fundamentally undermines the whole point of her article, is when she admits that “the size of the downturn in gun-related injuries was small, largely because firearms injuries account for a tiny fraction of the ills that bring patients to hospital emergency departments.”

The whole purpose of the article, which can be deduced from the headline alone, is to spread gun fear among the population, to help push the ill-informed masses to demand that the state increase its monopoly of force over those who are not part of the special class of “government.”

The headline states, “When NRA members attend their convention, ER doctors see fewer patients with gun injuries, study says.”

The study was conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, which has been pushing multiple reports to suggest that gun ownership puts everybody at risk.

Melissa Healy charged forward with her gun fear porn story, even as she revealed the numbers we are talking about.  Healy writes that, “during the NRA conventions, which are typically held for three or four days in April or early May, that rate fell to 1.19 per 100,000.”

The high rate was reported as being 1.49 per 100,000 visits. To put that in perspective, we’re talking about 11 people per one million visits versus 15 people per one million visits.

That difference is minuscule. To draw a correlation to the NRA convention, which is usually held in April or May, is to not understand that correlation and causation are not necessarily the same things.

The fact that we are talking about a difference that is infinitesimally small should also have stopped the study before it ever went to print.

But clearly, the New England Journal of Medicine is committed to doing their part to advance the pro-police-state narrative that guns are bad, but only when guns are in the possession of people who are not part of the elite, special class of ‘government.’

Last year, the NRA boasted about having the biggest convention ever, with 66,000 people attending. Yet, the New England Journal of Medicine chose to conduct a study that showed a statistically irrelevant difference in reported gun injuries at ER visits, knowing that the convention, in its best ever-attended event, could only muster 66,000 people.

42 percent of all US households claim to own at least one gun. The average size of a US Household is 2.54 people.  The population size of the US is 323.1 million,

This leaves us with 127.2 million households.  If we just assume that only one person per household is an actual gun owner, then we can assume there are 53.4 million gun owners (42 percent of households) in America.

This means that the NRA convention drew .12 percent of the gun owners in America. That’s a little over one tenth of one percent.

From these infinitesimal numbers, drawing causation assumptions from purely correlation numbers, measuring a difference that, statistically speaking, is close to irrelevant, the New England Journal of Medicine chose to release this agit prop study designed to advance the fear porn propaganda of the police state, and this shameful writer, Melissa Healy, chose to participate in this act of police state propaganda.
