Speaking of Bad Break-ups: Kim Jong-un’s Ex-Girlfriend Executed by Firing Squad

Note to self:  Never date a dictator who is prone to temper tantrums and has access to a firing squad.

Kim Jong-un, who claimed for himself the honor of Sexiest Man Alive after the website The Onion wrote a satirical article about the topic, can now claim the title of Worst Ex-Boyfriend Alive.

Hyon Song-wol, a North Korean pop singer, was said to be in a relationship with the dictator in the early 2000s, which ended because of the disapproval of Jong-un’s father. After the death of Jong-il, the relationship was rumored to have rekindled at the end of 2011.

Kim Jong-un reportedly met Hyon Song-wol approximately 10 years ago, before he was married. The relationship between the two is believed to have ended after interference from Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il, though the two had been rumored to be having an affair. Kim Jong-un’s wife, Ri Sol-ju, was also a member of the Unhasu Orchestra before their marriage. It is not clear if she had any role in the executions. (source)

Jong-un’s former lover and several other popular entertainers were accused of making sex videos and then selling them, prompting the executions.

The reports in South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper indicate that Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was among those arrested on August 17 for violating domestic laws on pornography.

All 12 were machine-gunned three days later, with other members of North Korea’s most famous pop groups and their immediate families forced to watch. The onlookers were then sent to prison camps, victims of the regime’s assumption of guilt by association, the reports stated.

“They were executed with machine guns while the key members of the Unhasu Orchestra, Wangjaesan Light Band and Moranbong Band as well as the families of the victims looked on,” said a Chinese source reported in the newspaper. (source)
