Second Giant Oarfish Death Starts Earthquake Rumors

Social media is full of the story of the second giant oarfish found in California in the space of a week.

Japanese mythology says that whenever the creature appears on the shores of Japan an earthquake will follow. (source)

Although scientists are dismissing the two California fish as nothing more than coincidence, others beg to differ and regard the sightings as an indication of an earthquake striking the area within a year.

In March 2010, the Japan Times and The Daily Telegraph did report that an unusually high number of Oarfish had been found washed up on beaches around the island.

On March 4th 2010 Julian Ryall of The Telegraph wrote:

Japan is bracing itself after dozens of rare giant oarfish – traditionally the harbinger of a powerful earthquake – have been washed ashore or caught in fishermen’s nets.

The appearance of the fish follows Saturday’s destructive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile and the January 12 tremors in Haiti, which claimed an estimated 200,000 lives.

A quake with a magnitude of 6.4 has also struck southern Taiwan.

This rash of tectonic movements around the Pacific “Rim of Fire” is heightening concern that Japan – the most earthquake-prone country in the world – is next in line for a major earthquake.

Almost exactly a year later the massive magnitude 9 megathrust quake hit Japan.

Tests on the first of the two fish have revealed that it was well fed, in good health and with no obvious signs of disease or attack. Scientists cannot explain how or why it died at this point. (source)
