Scores of Unburied Ebola Dead Found Stacked at a Hospital in Sierra Leone
Scores of unburied bodies were found in a cordoned off section of a local hospital, at least 25 of them had died over the previous five days.
A World Health Organization Ebola response team who had been sent to the remote mining area of Kono, Sierra Leone to investigate a spike in Ebola cases may have found the reason for the surge.
Scores of unburied bodies were found in a cordoned off section of a local hospital, at least 25 of them had died over the previous five days. Speaking to the BBC, Dr. Olu Olushayo, a member of the response team said:
“Our team met heroic doctors and nurses at their wits’ end, exhausted burial teams and lab techs, all doing the best they could but they simply ran out of resources and were overrun with gravely ill people.”
Sierra Leone authorities have locked down the area until December 23rd in order to try and control the outbreak.
The Guardian is reporting that an American national exposed to Ebola at a treatment unit in Sierra Leone arrived at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center in Maryland on Thursday. No details of the patient have been released and a statement from NIH said nothing about the victims condition, just that they will be admitted “for observation and to enroll in a clinical protocol”
There is no doubt that the number of infections and deaths from Ebola has been grossly under-reported. The World Health Organization has, by its own admission, missed the targets it set for the control of the disease.
Each week that passes seems to bring new ‘hotspots’ of infection, and each of those hotspots increases the chances of Ebola spreading further across the African continent. It goes without saying that the wider the spread, the more risk there is of it arriving in countries that have not yet been affected by the disease.
The clinical trials of a vaccine to combat Ebola have be paused due to volunteers experiencing joint pains after receiving the drug. Clinical trials of other drugs are continuing at this point. (source)
