Sales of the U.S. Constitution have hit a record high under President Trump

Sales of the U.S. Constitution have hit a record high under President Trump, jumping 60% since he moved into the West Wing.

The NPD Group, responsible for the national count called BookScan, said that sales of the Founding Fathers’ roadmap to democracy are about three times higher than they were under former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Since Trump became the GOP front-runner in the 2016 presidential election, sales have jumped, said NPD. Some 275,000 copies were sold that year, “which is the greatest number of print edition sales of the U.S. Constitution sold since NPD BookScan began tracking U.S. book sales in 2004,” said the group.

Once in office, sales continued to rise, increasing 60% to an average of 19,800 copies sold each month during his first 33 months.

“By way of comparison, an average of 7,500 were sold monthly in Barack Obama’s first term and 5,600 in George W. Bush’s second term,” said NPD.

“Current year-to-date sales are more than 50,000 units higher than at any point in the terms of both Barack Obama and George W. Bush, and we still have more than two months left in 2019,” said Kristen McLean, a books industry analyst for NPD Bookscan.

While Trump has proven to be the Constitution’s salesman in chief, it is unclear who is buying the document, conservatives who support him or liberals looking for ways to take him down.

NPD did find that certain Trump-related events were sales drivers, including his nomination, election, and inauguration. They also spiked during the “Unite the Right” protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017 and during the Supreme Court nomination hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

The latest spike is “occurring now, in the context of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of the start of formal impeachment hearings,” said NPD

“There have been some other smaller spikes in Constitution sales in recent history — such as 2010, following the 2009 founding of the Tea Party,” said McLean. “However, that spike is dwarfed by what we have been seeing since these last few years. Regardless of your political affiliation, there is no doubt that our current political climate has done wonders for constitutional engagement.”
