Though Putin recently ordered most of Russia’s forces out of Syria, those who remain have proven that they are not to be trifled with. A special forces officer was recently killed during an operation in the Syrian city of Palmyra, though the exact day this occurred has not been divulged by Russian authorities. The circumstances surrounding his death have led many observers to call the unnamed officer a hero.

A spokesman for Russia’s military base in Syria announced the death on Thursday, and explained what happened to him. “An officer of Russian special operations forces was killed near Palmyra while carrying out a special task to direct Russian airstrikes at Islamic State group targets. The officer was carrying out a combat task in Palmyra area for a week, identifying crucial IS targets and passing exact coordinates for strikes with Russian planes.”

Unfortunately, the officer was discovered during the operation and was quickly surrounded by ISIS fighters. Instead of surrendering, he called in an airstrike on his own position, which led to his death and presumably took a few of the bastards with him. The officer is the 7th man to be killed during Russia’s military campaign in Syria. The announcement of his death marks the first time that the Russian government has admitted that its special forces are operating on the ground in Syria.
