Russian Fighter Jet Came Within 10ft of U.S. Spy Plane Over the Black Sea

American military aircraft have been intercepted by Russian jets over a dozen times this year, mostly over the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. It’s happened four times in just the past month. However, the latest incident takes the cake for being the most harrowing.

On Wednesday two US defense officials claimed that a Navy P-8 surveillance plane was intercepted by a Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet while on patrol over the Black Sea. The Russian aircraft performed “unsafe and unprofessional” maneuvers around the US plane for 19 minutes, and at one point came within 10 feet of the P-8.

According to one official who spoke anonymously “they’re up there for 12 hours and there are lots of interactions. But only one of the incidents was what the pilot determined was unsafe.” US officials are now talking with the pilot of the P-8 and reviewing the incident to see if it should be brought up at an upcoming meeting between Russian and American defense officials.

In any case, one must wonder what the US government thought would happen when they allowed a spy plane to fly in Russia’s backyard. If Russian surveillance aircraft were flying through the Gulf of Mexico, wouldn’t our aircraft respond accordingly?
