Early this morning, Russia’s parliament gave their military permission to launch airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria. Within hours, bombs fell near the Syrian city of Homs, which was followed by multiple attacks across the country. The airstrikes destroyed military equipment, munitions, and vehicles belonging to the Islamic group. The US is now crying foul over the incident, because apparently, the forces that Russia refers to as ‘ISIS’ are merely moderate rebels according to the US.
None of the attacks have occurred in areas that the West considers to be ISIS territory, which has led officials in France, Germany, and the US to chastise Russia for broadly targeting opponents of the Assad regime, rather than ISIS. Secretary of State John Kerry told the UN Security Council earlier today that “Moreover, we have also made clear that we would have grave concerns should Russia strike areas where ISIL and al Qaeda affiliated targets are not operating. Strikes of that kind would question Russia’s real intentions — fighting ISIL or protecting the Assad regime.”
Regardless of who the Russians are actually targeting, they’re really just cleaning up the mess left by the United States. All of the groups that are opposed to the Assad regime have either been tolerated or directly supported by the US at one time or another. Our government has done everything in its power to destabilize the region, including providing support for violent extremists. In this topsy-turvy world, the US is no longer the champion in the fight against terrorism, if it ever was.
On a final note, can you guess who made this quote? “The only way to fight international terrorism…is to act pre-emptively, and not wait till they come to our home.” That’s not some obscure George Bush quote from ten years ago. Putin said that earlier today.
