Obama: ‘Embrace Economic Patriotism’ So We Can ‘Rise or Fall Together as a Nation’

How do you like these collective apples?

On June 26th, Obama gave his weekly telepromptering the White House later titled, “Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes” in which the grand spokesperson for the United States of America, Inc. halfheartedly did his job reading a script on a screen to reassure us all that everything is economically rosy and coming up roses more and more everyday, before he urged the nation to “rally around economic patriotism” and rise and fall together as one nation and one people.

The next day, the White House’s official Twitter sent out the message above with the video.

Wikipedia defines economic patriotism as, “the coordinated and promoted behaviour of consumers or companies (both private and public) that consists of favoring the goods or services produced in their country or in their group of countries.”

Buy American. Well that sounds all good and fine in theory and I’m all for it, but the U.S. manufacturing base has been largely shipped overseas. People with little money to begin with (and working with less all the time) have to look much harder these days to find a product that doesn’t have a “made in China” sticker slapped on it, or a list of several other countries, the majority of which aren’t “USA”.

Bailed out mega corporations have bailed out of America.

Bank of America, which received a whopping $45 billion federal bailout during the financial crisis, went on a hiring spree in 2012 — overseas, right after announcing plans to lay off 30,000 American workers. When people call to get their account information, they are likely talking to someone from the Philippines now.

While Obama claimed saving General Motors with a $51 billion bailout loan (of which, only $36 billion has been repaid, and the stock sell off will apparently lose Americans somewhere around $10 billion) was a huge achievement for him on the 2012 campaign trail, GM also took that money and ran — to China, where a large number of the jobs have since been outsourced.

Honeywell International announced plans to close down multiple manufacturing plants last year as it “expands such work overseas”. At least they put a positive-sounding spin on it, right? General Electric, Delphi Automotive, and Eaton Corp. have all moved factories out of the U.S. to other countries like Hungary, Mexico and the Netherlands, shutting down American plants and taking away even more American jobs.

The list goes on and on. In 2010, factory jobs fell to the lowest on record in the U.S. since World War II. This chart pretty much sums it up:

Manufacturing-Employment-425x300

As Michael Snyder has reported, “It has been estimated that the U.S. economy loses approximately 9,000 jobs for every 1 billion dollars of goods that are imported from overseas, and according to the Economic Policy Institute, America is losing about half a million jobs to China every single year.”

On top of that, look at this list of just a few of the many American mega corporations that make billions and don’t pay ONE FAT DIME in taxes:

Do you think closing one corporate tax loophole out of the thousands these companies use to avoid paying taxes is really going to change anything?

In the meantime, the cost of living is going up for everyone while average wages are continuing to drop. The middle class is dying, or rather, being systematically murdered. There are fewer and fewer small businesses. The average American family’s debt-to-income ratio is now over 150%. One out of every seven Americans is on food stamps, and over three-fourths of the nation is literally living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Ignoring the fact that what the president is proposing with his statement sounds a lot like socialism

— it doesn’t seem like any of us are really rising with anything.

More like we’re falling. Together.

(P.S. — A few lines later in the same teleprompter session, Obama also said we can “restore the American dream,” if that tells you anything…)
