Police Petrol-bombed at Anti-Austerity Protest in Greece

Young Greeks pelted riot police with petrol bombs and stones today at anti-austerity protests in Athens.

The country has ground to a halt as Greeks stage a 24 hour general strike to protest the new, even more crippling, austerity measures that are to be instituted to allow the country to make its bailout payment.  This is the second general strike in a month.

Not only are more cuts being made, but even higher taxes are being levied against the struggling Greeks. The few business which have survived the past three years say that they will be utterly destroyed by the tax increase.

Police responded to the violence with tear gas.  More than 4000 police in full riot gear lined the streets of Athens this morning to protect the Parliament building against thousands of angry protesters .Water cannons and steel fencing are also present.

Business and private sector activity are halted for the day, and government offices are closed as the country grinds to a complete stop in protest.
