Philly Police Officer Charged After Abandoning Starving Dog in Trash Bag

The police in this country don’t have a very good reputation when it comes to their treatment of dogs. I don’t know when this trend started, but lately cops have been killing dogs at an alarming rate, and often with little provocation. That’s why this incident that occurred in Philadelphia last year is unfortunately, not very surprising.

On November 23rd, a woman was walking her dog when she noticed a garbage bag with a Pit Bull’s head sticking out. The dog was wrapped in a bed sheet, and was severely emaciated. She called the SPCA, who took the dog to a shelter and nursed her back to health. The dog has since been adopted by a family in suburban Philadelphia.

Normally that would be the end of a very typical story. Dogs are abandoned all the time, and some of them are lucky enough to find new homes. But it turns out that this time, the police were able to find out who abandoned the dog. The man responsible was one of their own.

Because the dog had been micro-chipped, the authorities managed to track down her former owner. It turned out to be 33-year-old Michael Long, an 11-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. After a search warrant was issued, the police found bed sheets in Long’s home which matched the bed sheets that the dog was wrapped in.

Long had adopted the dog only a few months prior to abandoning her, for reasons that haven’t been made public. He has since been charged with several animal cruelty crimes, and has been suspended from the police force for 30 days “with the intent to dismiss.”
