Papal Conclave Begins The Process Of Electing The Next Pope

Would the Cardinals risk appointing a Pope named Peter and take the chance that Malachy’s vision could come to pass? We will know very soon.

115 cardinals have attended a special mass in the Vatican at the start of the proceedings to elect the next Pope. Later today they will move into the Sistine Chapel where they will cast their votes away from the prying eyes of both Catholics and non-Catholics around the world.

They will vote four times each day until a new Pope is elected. After each vote the ballot papers are burned. Black smoke will pour from the specially installed chimney if  a new Pope is not elected, while white smoke will be emitted when a decision has been reached.

Even those who do not follow formal religion are fascinated by this election to the Papacy. According to the prophecy of St  Malachy which was written 900 years ago the next elected Pope will be Petrus Romanus, Peter of Rome. According to the prophesy he will be the last Pope.

Would the Cardinals risk appointing a Pope named Peter and take the chance that Malachy’s vision could come to pass? We will know very soon.
