Residents of Lancaster, Pennsylvania have been hearing a rather disturbing chorus coming out of a nearby county prison. Inmates of the prison have been heard yelling and screaming out of the windows. Here’s what it sounds like.

So what are they yelling about? The conditions they live with in the prison. Namely, that they’re not getting enough food and water. A commissioner with the prison board brushed off the claims, and told a local news outlet that the prisoners were complaining about receiving smaller food portions, and callously added “I don’t know why they have expectations of cake and steak in prison. If you don’t like the diet, don’t come to prison.”

He seems to have forgotten that in America, you don’t have to do anything wrong to go to prison. Nearly three-quarters of all US prisoners are non-violent offenders, many whom are incarcerated for the “crime” of ingesting drugs. The prison has claimed that they plan on shutting the windows belonging to inmates caught yelling out into the street, a plan which is in blatant disregard for the prisoner’s health, since summer is near and the cells have poor ventilation.
