Off-Duty San Antonio Cop Crashes into Squad Car, Faces DWI Charge

I swear to drunk I’m not God, occifer!

An officer from the San Antonio Police Department faces a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) charge and has been placed on paid administrative leave after he rear-ended a Kirby City police squad car early on the morning of Friday, June 16.

The off-duty officer, Armando Alvarado Jr., 40, denied that he crashed his truck and insisted he was merely pulling over to assist the Kirby officer, who was in the middle of writing a traffic ticket when Alvarado hit his car. The 37-year-old Kirby officer sustained minor injuries to the back and neck, and the victim of the traffic stop stayed with him at the scene until help arrived.

According to the arrest warrant obtained by KSAT, a Texas ABC News affiliate, even though Alvarado had slurred speech, was drunkenly staggering around and refused to take a breathalyzer, he accused the Kirby officer, whom he just rear-ended, of being intoxicated.

Shockingly, the Kirby officer didn’t buy it; Alvarado was cuffed, taken to the Bexar County Jail and charged with DWI.

William McManus, chief of the San Antonio Police Department, has not yet commented on the incident, but a SAPD spokesperson said the chief was aware of it.

“The actions of one individual officer doesn’t reflect on the department as a whole,” Kirby Police Chief Kevin Bois said.

Alvarado was relatively new to SAPD, and had only been on the force for one year.

That was not the only recent incident of drunk driving at the SAPD, however. In April, three SAPD officers were arrested for driving while intoxicated within hours of each other, one of whom had three children in the car.

Gena Rodriguez, an 11-year veteran of the department, faces a charge of drunken driving with a child under the age of 15, a felony in Texas, while 20-year veteran Harold Thomaston and Bexar Sherrif’s Office deputy Sabrina Moreno both face drunk driving charges.
