Obama Says He’ll Fix Immigration on His Own, “Without Congress”

Tired of waiting around for Congress to do things his way cooperate, King Obama has decided to bypass Congress to enact “comprehensive immigration reform.”

Citing an attempt to work with Congress a year and a half ago, President Obama declared Congress’ inaction and political posturing to be the reason he must take executive action. “I would sign an immigration bill into law today and Washington would solve a problem in a bipartisan way,” President Obama said.  “For more than a year, Republicans in the house have refused to allow an up or down vote to fix our broken immigration system.” 

“I take executive action only when we have a serious problem and Congress chooses to do nothing,” the President assured. The most chilling portion of his announcement was when he suggested,  “American cannot wait forever for them to act. That’s why today, I’m beginning a new effort to fix our immigration system… on my own, without congress.“

House Speaker John Boehner said more executive action is not going to solve the problem – it’s only going to make things worse. Here is his entire statement:

“In our conversation last week, I told the president what I have been telling him for months: the American people and their elected officials don’t trust him to enforce the law as written.  Until that changes, it is going to be difficult to make progress on this issue.  The crisis at our southern border reminds us all of the critical importance of fixing our broken immigration system. It is sad and disappointing that – faced with this challenge – President Obama won’t work with us, but is instead intent on going it alone with executive orders that can’t and won’t fix these problems.

“The president’s own executive orders have led directly to the humanitarian crisis along the Southern border, giving false hope to children and their families that if they enter the country illegally they will be allowed to stay.  The White House claims it will move to return these children to their families in their home countries, yet additional executive action from this president isn’t going to stem the tide of illegal crossings, it’s only going to make them worse.  As the Supreme Court reminded us this week, under our Constitution there are sharp limits to what the president can accomplish if he ignores the American people and their elected representatives.”

Two years ago, Obama announced his first executive action on immigration – one that ended deportations for up to 1 million young adult illegal immigrants. That move, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA, remains controversial, and is one of the reasons the GOP argues it can’t trust Obama to enforce the law.

Republicans also blame DACA and lax enforcement for the current surge of children and families from Central America, who are flooding across the border and overwhelming the government’s resources.

Critics say that Obama is also motivated by concerns of political fallout for the Democratic Party.

Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, said the president has developed a predictable practice of creating programs that help immigrants come election time. In June 2012, he created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program that has allowed more than 500,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children to file with the federal government to avoid deportation. And now, Stein said, he will “conveniently” release the findings of his deportation review a few months before the election in November.

“(The speech) wasn’t a sincere effort to advance policy. It was partisan,” Stein said. “And now he will try to do the same, grand gesture somewhere between mid-August and the November election, a get-out-the-vote move.”

Republicans say that Obama’s immigration policies leave the impression that women and children from Central America will be allowed to stay in the United States. The administration has worked to send a clear message in recent weeks that new arrivals will be targeted for deportation.
