Obama Plans Signing of UN Gun Treaty On June 3rd Despite Senate Vote Blocking It

un-gun-control

Despite a Senate amendment blocking the treaty, President Barack Obama plans to sign the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty on June 3rd.

Millions of Americans have expressed fear over the possible passing of the UN small arms treaty with many organizations and news outlets coming to the conclusion that, if passed, the treaty could lead to a massive international registry of all guns.

Breitbart.com reported:

This treaty is ostensibly aimed at putting an end to gun trafficking across international boundaries, and both Breitbart News and the NRA have argued that it will eventually require an international gun registry in order to be enforceable.

The ATT also provides the executive branch of our government with broad powers for controlling which guns do and don’t come into the country, and includes ambiguous language that a gun-control-friendly administration can use to its advantage.

Luckily, Senator James Inhofe introduced an amendment in late March that essentially blocked the treaty.

On April 2, the U.N. passed the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) by a 153-4 vote, with the U.S. voting in favor. President Obama is expected to sign the ATT on June 3, but it will not be binding on Americans because the Senate, which must approve the ratification of the treaty, rejected it by a vote of 53 to 46. Every vote in favor of the treaty in the Senate came from a Democrat or an independent. A few Democrats voted with Republicans.

The Senate did this at 3 a.m. on March 23, after Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) introduced an amendment to the budget to keep the U.S from entering the ATT.

Although the signing of the treaty by Obama will, at least at first, be a largely ceremonial gesture aimed at pleasing his gun grabbing base, it could also lead the Senate to reconsider the ratification of the bill.  (If this does happen you can count on the corporate media to push for the passing of the treaty and label all those that do not support it as child killing, right wing crazies.)

Regardless whether or not Obama signs this UN Treaty or whether the corrupt Senate finally does pass it, the fact remains that the American people are absolutely not legally bound by an international governing body.

If the treaty passes, it will be yet another signal that it is time for the American people to start ignoring laws that infringe on Constitutionally protected rights.
