NYPD Aiming to Stop the Public From Finding Out About Crimes
New York has 77 police precincts and all of them have been told to stop providing the media with details of local crimes that take place.
New York has 77 police precincts and all of them have been told to stop providing the media with details of local crimes that take place. Starting January, all media requests for information have to go through the Deputy Commission For Public Information (DCPI).
Journalists will no longer have access to crime reports.
Although the DCPI has, in the past, handled the media enquiries regarding major crimes, smaller crime detail requests have been dealt with by the commanding officer of the precinct in which they took place.
Christopher Dunn, associate legal director of The New York Civil Liberties Union said:
“This is just another sign of the current NYPD’s hostility to public accountability.” (source)
Raymond Kelly, outgoing Police Commissioner has consistently diminished the information flow, and the type of information released.
