While President Obama and other assorted leftists continue to claim that illegal immigration from Mexico is on a downward trend, there are some numbers that are impossible to ignore (including the numbers that the border patrol has fudged). The truth is, our border is just as much of a free for all as it has ever been, which is especially true when it comes to illegal alien children.
Their numbers soared by 1,200% between 2011 and 2014 according to a recent Congressional report. Most of the children come from Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, and their numbers are growing. 52,000 were caught in 2014, a record-breaking year. 20,000 have been detained in the first few months of 2016, which may put this year on track to beat 2014’s record. According to the report “This unexpected surge of children strained U.S. government resources and created a complex crisis with humanitarian implications.”
On top of that, very few of these migrant children are ever sent back home. For every 100 children that make it to the US from Central America, only 3 are deported. Apparently their countries of origin are not equipped to take them back. “None of the governments have effective means of tracking deported children after their return. The countries have very few programs to reintegrate the children into society, ensure their safety from domestic abuse or societal violence, keep them in school, or help them find jobs. Without any of those conditions assured, many children are likely to try to migrate again.”
Of course, there isn’t any way for the U.S. to ensure the stability and prosperity of these nations, so the problem isn’t going away anytime soon. The only way to stem this tide is to eliminate any incentive to come here illegally in the first place.
