North Korea Threatens Pre-Emptive Strikes against South Korea and US

Once again North Korea is threatening to strike South Korea and the United States. A recent agreement between South Korea and the United States allows them to attack North Korea if it is believed they are going to use their nuclear weapons.

A statement released by the CPRK, the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said:

“The military plot aims to derail the ongoing peace process and dialogue on the Korean Peninsula and can fuel tensions that can lead to a nuclear conflict.” (source)

Although many will see this as nothing more than a sabre-rattling exercise, there is no place for complacency. There’s no telling what goes on in the mind of a dictator, and with nobody to apply the brakes if the tensions escalate, it’s anyone’s guess what Kim Jong-un would do if the ‘provocation’ he accuses the South Koreans and the US governments of continues.

On the one hand, he knows that he is in a corner. North Korea would be annihilated if the attempted to use their weapons. On the other, he may feel eventually that he has no option but to strike against the west lest his subjects think him weak.

With everything else that’s going on right now, it would be easy to overlook the young man half a world away with his finger hovering over a button that could result in the end of the world as we know it.
