NOAA Closely Monitoring Two Extremely Large and Complex Sunspot Groups

Although the Sun has been quiet for the last 24-36 hours, experts feel this is very much the calm before the storm.

Two very large and complex sunspot groups are making the move from the far side to the Earth facing side of the Sun.

AR1897 and AR1899 have strong mixed polarity magnetic fields that gives rise to strong flares.

Although the Sun has been quiet for the last 24-36 hours, experts feel this is very much the calm before the storm, and they estimate the chance of an X-class flare at 30% over the next 24 hours and the chance of an M-class at 60% over the same time period.

In addition, AR1890, responsible for several strong but brief flares, may not be done with us yet. Its position means that any flare coming from it will have more effect on earth than those it threw off earlier in the week.

There is a large coronal hole on the Earth side of the Sun and the solar wind blowing from it looks set to reach us on November 16-17th.

Todays sunspot number is 147.
