Move over Girl Scouts and screw those [amazon text=Thin Mints&asin=B007GPDGK8]; there’s a new girl’s club to train today’s young ladies in America to be tomorrow’s feminist, gay rights, Black Lives Matter, environmental social justice warriors, complete with brown berets.
They are called the “Radical Monarchs”.
The Guardian describes the group as,
“an alternative to the Scout movement for girls of colour in Oakland, California. Its members earn badges not for sewing or selling cookies, but for completing challenges on social justice including Black Lives Matter, ‘radical beauty’, being ‘an LGBTQ ally’ and the environment.”
The group is apparently limited to black and Hispanic girls aged eight to 12. So far they’ve earned badges for things like meeting with the New Black Panthers.
This next detail will be a shock. The Radical Monarchs were started by a college professor and a community organizer who met in an Ethics Studies grad program at San Francisco State and who found Girl Scouts just way too mainstream.
They plan to start adding at least one troop a year and grow the movement across America.
The Guardian also reports that,
“The Monarchs’ critics accuse them of brainwashing their children and unnecessarily segregating them.”
But then quickly follows that up with,
“But their warm welcome in Oakland and the demand from across the US and around the world for similar groups suggests that they’ve tapped into something that’s needed.”
